Conflict-Free Diamonds

Diamonds are meant to be a gift of love, and we at Celtic Rings Ltd abhor the way in which some gems have been used to fund conflict.
Conflict-Free Diamonds

Thankfully, today over 99% of all rough diamonds come from sources free of conflict.

Teamwork & Certification

To stop this practice, governments; our industry and human rights groups created the Kimberley Process in 2002, which today ensures that over 99% of all rough diamonds come from sources free of conflict.

Kimberley Process

The United Nations along with various governments and the diamond industry recognized the need for action. Working together with non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International and Global Witness, they created a system to prevent conflict diamonds entering the legitimate diamond supply chain.

So they developed the agreement known as the Kimberley Process. This process requires the participating governments to ensure that each shipment of diamonds be exported and/or imported in a secure container accompanied by a numbered government validated certificate which states that the diamonds have been sourced from areas free of conflict.

Only co-participant countries in the Kimberley Process can export and import diamond shipments legally. If an uncertified shipment of rough diamonds is received by a participant country it will not be allowed to enter or leave the country. This method ensures that no conflict diamonds can enter the legitimate supply chain and prevents them from returning to the country of origin.

52 governments adopted the Kimberley Process Certification System in November 2002 and it was fully implemented by August, 2003. Now there are 72 governments, along with the diamond industry and non-government organizations, that are committed and legally bound to the UN-mandated process. Kimberley Process participants currently account for well over 99% of the entire global production of uncut, rough diamonds.
