Guide to Gold used in Celtic Rings Ltd products.
Gold has been known and highly valued from earliest times, not only because of its beauty, but also because gold is easier to work than other metals.
Gold is available as white or yellow gold, both of which are available in 14 or 18 karat. The difference between these two are as follows:
- 14 karat - an alloy consisting of 58.5% pure gold and 41.5% other metals like silver and copper
- 18 karat - an alloy consisting of 75% pure gold and 25% other metals
18 karat gold is slightly softer and more easily scratched than 14 karat, but is richer in color and luster. However, neither of these will tarnish. Gold is the ultimate precious metal and its purity is always measured in karats, the purest being 24 karat. Gold of this purity, however, is impractical to wear as jewelry as it is very soft, can damage easily, and cannot maintain the delicate designs of our fine jewelry.
Solid gold is therefore combined with other alloys and is then measured as 10, 14 or 18 karat. This combination can be understood as a fraction; 10 karat is measured 10/24 or 416 parts gold per 1000, 14 karat is 14/24 or 583 parts of gold per 1000, and 18 karat is 750 parts gold per 1000 parts. All Celtic-WeddingRings.com gold is either 10, 14 or 18 karat.
